A Space for Live Art / Un espace pour la performance

A Space for Live Art

Live art, an artistic discipline that “defies all definition”, is experiencing a remarkable renewal, it is, however, still little known to the world at large. To bridge this gap and strengthen the position of new forms of live art in Europe, eight cultural structures have come together as partners in a five-year European project entitled “A space for live art”. Through each partner’s programming and the different forms of exchange – co-productions, dissemination, residences, international symposia – the diversity of the artistic approaches will be highlighted.

Meetings on theory and practice, the constitution of a critical corpus written by professionals and documentation of projects in sound and/or images will strengthen the reflexive and documentary aspect of live art. There will also be room for mediation and transmission, through an infiltration of the public area and a teaching strand, in particular in art schools where young talent will be encouraged.

Un espace pour la performance

La performance, discipline artistique qui résiste a toute définition, connaît un remarquable renouveau depuis quelques années. Et pourtant, elle reste peu connue du grand public. Afin de pallier cette méconnaissance et conforter la place dévolue aux nouvelles formes de performance en Europe, huit structures et lieux se sont associés dans le cadre d’un projet européen d’une durée de cinq ans, intitulé Un espace pour la performance.

A travers la programmation de chaque partenaire et les différentes formes d’échanges mises en place -coproductions, diffusion, résidences, colloques internationaux-, c’est la diversité des approches artistiques qui est ici mise en exergue. Des rendez-vous théoriques, la constitution par des professionnels d’un corpus critique ainsi que la documentation des projets en son et/ou en images viendront renforcer l’aspect réflexif et documentaire a propos de la performance. Place aussi a la médiation et a la transmission, via l’infiltration et l’occupation de l’espace public et un volet pédagogique, notamment par des collaorations avec les écoles d’art ou les jeunes talents seront encouragés.

„Interakcje” festival is an annual, prestigious meeting of the most important modern artists from all over the world.

It is the only one in Poland and one of the very few European annual festivals about widely considered art of performance. This event is permanently stuck to the list of the most important performance meetings of European range. It also is one of very few projects in the world, made so consequently every year.

This year there is going to be an 10th anniversary of Interakcje. To this edition the organisers have invited performers who had had the greatest influence on the development of The Event.

During the festival there are going to be presented: about 40 individual performances, special anniversary concert and series of lectures about art at high schools.

Every year we are trying to incerase the essential standards of the art we present. We pay attention especially to the global diversity caused by cultural variety of modern art. It's attainable by inviting artists from various countries. That's why we were able to see over 100 performers from over 20 countries including such distant and exotic ones like India, Thailand, New Zeland, Singapore, Canada, USA or Japan during past 9 edition of Interakcje.

Since 2005 every edition of Interakcje is made according to the individual warden program. This way helps to develop the festival, orders making decisions nad includes a bit of reflection about art. Programme made by the warden helps to reveal common point of view about art. This makes the event something more than just the list of names. This way enables us to see the variety of forms of modern art, something more than just individual artistic decisions but also new trends and influence of local cultures, civilizations and historical experiences. In the first year of making Interakcje this way Alastair MacLennan – artist, theoretician, organisator, profesor of School of Art and Design University of Ulster in Northern Ireleand was the warden. In 2006 Richard Martel – canadian artist, publisher, critic, founder of LE LIEU in Quebec presented his own warden programme. The warden of last year's festival was Thai artist Chumpon Apisuk.

Interakcje 2008 is going to be an attempt of resume all edition so far. We have invited artists who's performances had the greatest influence on developing essential standards of the past editions and shows the point of widely considered performance art around the world. Everyone of the invited is going to present at least one of his own masterpiece and that amount to at least 40 individual performances. The event consist also of theoretical and educational parts. We are going to organise panel moderated by the critics and theoretisians of art and series of lectures for high schools that referes about the part of art and artist at today's society presented by the artists and art critics. This year's festival for the sake of 10th anniversary is going to be splendored to the modern music concert that fits well to the programme of the event and is going to be appreciated by many other people than just Interakcje vievers. All performances during the festival are free of charge.

Since 2001 we have been organising some extra presentations of some chosen artists who take part in Interakcje in other cities of Poland eg. Warsaw, Cracow, Lodz Katowice and Bielsko-Biala. That makes more people interested in modern art able to see our performances.

Interakcje 2007

Between 7 and 12 may 2007 9th edition of The Interakcje took place in Piotrkow Trybunalski. In that year Chumpon Apisuk was artistical co-warden of the festival. He is the world famous Thai artist and animator of artistic actings. Due to his choices we were able to see piece of Asian performance which has quite different cultural and histoical background from the European art, because it is inspired by distant and exotic cultures and tradition. The novelity of that edition an expert discussion ”Krytycy Festivalu”(eng. Festival Critics). It was a theoretical panel with artists and critics and it added some theoretical and educational aspects. We are pleased that despite the discussion about understanding and and the point of modern art, the interest of the matter is still incerasing. It is also very good to hear about number nominations and prestigious awards like „Paszport Polityki” or „Nagroda Wielka Fundacji Kultury” for performance artists.

The idea of the festival emerged in 1998. There was dinner in "Europa" restaurant, which at that time still functioned only as s gastronomy and a place of social gatherings, and it was organised to celebrate the symbolic transfer of the centre of the world to Piotrkow. During this dinner Ryszard Piegza said : Why not here !

A few months later we were Ryszard's guests in Paris. We were walking down Montaigne Avenue and heading towards the Underground, when somewhere near Marlene Dietriech's house Ryszard said : So let's do it. He allocated responsibilities and suggested some names. It was only then that we, still unconscious of the power of interactions, felt what we really wanted. The art performance festival in Piotrkow came into being.

The first International Festival of the Art of Action "Interakcje" took place in May 1999. Before that time Piotrkow was a place where International Meetings of Artists "TRANSLATIONS" were organised. So artists from the whole world have been coming to the town for over ten years to present their achievements, to discuss the modern art, to interact with the place and its inhabitants - in other words to create art!

Every year when working on the programme of the festival we set ourselves new goals and challenges relating to its future and forms of evolution, which is necessary if the festival is to maintain its own image and keep up to date. "Interakcje" systematically strengthen its position among other events celebrating modern art. The festival also maintains its freshness and spontaneity and the number of both adherents and opponents is constantly growing.

"Interakcje" Festival is also an attempt to commemorate that clash of enormous artistic power with a very special town, in a symbolic place - the Centre of the World.

The power exploding like a volcano, just as impossible to seize as performance art.
